L'île aux amants

L'île aux amants

After the sumptuous “Venise sauvée des eaux”, Yslaire embarks on an exploration of the world of his “Amants.” “L’île des amants” is the fifth in this series of odes to the lovelorn. An accomplished play of light and shade establishes a harmony between foreground and background. The delicate layering of folds in the young woman’s clothing gives her the allure of an angel (a thematic preoccupation in Yslaire’s work). The artist uses the occasion to reappraise his colour palette (a process of colour matching was created in order to sensitively render the nuances of colour that the author of Sambre achieves in his work). This subtle and exacting approach also pays homage to Arnold Bocklin, the creator of the fascinating “Ile des morts.”
