Seaside rendez-vous

Eric Verhoest, the publisher behind Champaka, was also at the time in question a journalist working in Belgian television. On the occasion of the publication of “Mémoires avec dames”, he brought Jacques de Loustal to Ostend to film a sequence at the Thermae Palace, a place steeped in an atmosphere that carried echoes of the artist’s own world. While walking the sea wall, the artist took photographs, as was his wont, of various unusual sites, including this clock tower, which was a familiar feature of Ostend’s skyline (and which, regrettably, has been modernised). Some months later, Champaka suggested to Loustal that he create an image redolent of the particular atmosphere of the North Sea. The day of the screen-print’s signature brought news of the death of Freddy Mercury, the lead singer with Queen. The title of one of their songs would become the title of the print.
