André Juillard simply had to be a part of the beautiful collection of prints that Champaka consecrated to the city of Paris. His long-awaited entrance took place in 2000. This series has already played host to François Avril, Jacques de Loustal, Götting and Dupuy & Berberian. Juillard has chosen to set his scene in an area that he cherishes, near the Hôtel de Ville in the Saint-Gervais quarter. The scene features an artist’s studio, and provides the occasion for the “Paris” series to welcome its first diptych. The first image shows the studio at night-time, devoid, as are the windows of the building opposite the studio, of all human presence. The image is magnificently balanced in its execution. The second, smaller, image introduces a feminine presence that captures the viewer’s gaze. The woman is perhaps the model portrayed in the “Renaissance” sketch that is seen pinned to the wall of the deserted studio.
