Le Chat du Rabbin

Joann Sfar’s film “Gainsbourg (Vie Héroïque)” will be released in cinemas on the 20th of January 2010. To coincide with this release, Champaka will issue a print from Sfar’s “Chat du Rabbin” series. The image taken from the cover of the album “Malka des Lions” has a special significance for the author:

“The ‘Malka des Lions’ is a character my grandmother often spoke of and which no doubt really did exist, which isn’t that extraordinary because in those days people often caught lions in the Atlas... a bit like how these days Romanians catch bears. The difference is that this Malka sang and prayed in synagogues and had achieved a certain notoriety doing so. Rumour has it he was an ancestor of mine! But the story my grandmother told me more than any other was how he died. The Malka appears in the second album of the ‘Chat du Rabbin’ and I drew his features to resemble (french writer) Romain Gary because I wanted a matamore, a braggart - he’s like a character out of the Commedia dell’Arte.”
