Paris, blvd Haussmann

Götting, creator of “La valise Sanderson” and “Happy Living”, was an obvious choice for a print collection dedicated to Paris. He has chosen an evocative scene, rather than an obvious landmark. “The idea was to feature an aspect of Paris that was typical, but not necessarily a monument or a tourist destination. The Morris column, which dates from the end of the nineteenth century, greatly appealed to me. Appearing almost as the main element of the composition, it shows a publicity poster for the play “Art” which was playing at the time that I did the drawing. I don’t think it’s the actual poster. The red tone is there to create a vibrant area, by contrast with the grey-green tones of the wet street. In the background is the rear of the Opéra Garnier, barely recognisable. The couple crossing the street beneath an umbrella is probably hurrying there to attend a performance…”
