La tempête

La tempête

Yslaire, who created this unpublished drawing between work on the first two “Sambre” albums, has a penchant for scenes of shipwreck. One might have supposed that the union of Bernard and Julie would endure and that they would remain a couple, inseparable; the further unfolding of the saga shows us that Bernard will die all too soon… “At the time of the first volume, I was still hesitating between the idea of an all-consuming romance, for which I would lean towards the use of watercolour, and an almost Hergé an restraint. I try to maintain a style that is almost “ligne claire”, to which I add the use of shadow. It goes against my nature. I draw from within, not from the outside. Hergé defines the contours of the form, using an absolute minimum of modelling inside. My approach is quite the opposite. I’m a ball of energy. It’s like an opposition of clear line and shaded line.”
