In “La légende des Sambre” Yslaire recalls the moment when his pencil finally brought forth the outlines of the central character of “Sambre.” “It appears to me that I had drawn, without success, several sketches in an attempt to define Julie. Then comes the juncture in the page where I say to myself “I have to do it now.” I sketch it quickly and it goes well, it reflects what I wanted. Julie is the only character that was found, not in preliminary sketches but directly, as it were, on the plate. She enters the story in a forceful manner because she will alter the scenario of the first tome and will then continue to do that more and more as it continues.”
