Faut-il que nous mourions ensemble

The fourth volume of the “Sambre” series, “Faut-il que nous mourions ensemble” was due to be published in the first quarter of 1996. The previously unpublished screenprint of the same name had its origins in a proposal for the cover illustration of the impending volume. The image arrived as an enlarged sketch and the colours were directly applied. So much for the hallowed principles of “ligne claire”: there was to be no preliminary inking; no outline; no equivocation. The house of Sambre ventures into the sphere of the angels. Or perhaps the descent into Hades of Bernard and Julie brings them into the presence of Orpheus and Eurydice. This image is quintessential Yslaire, and represents perhaps one of his most sincerely felt artistic explorations…
