Tillieux saw himself primarily as a storyteller, and the enlargement of this scene from the album entitled “La voiture immergée” confirms his great talent for placing his undoubted drawing skills at the service of an unerring sense of narration. Mystery, an atmosphere of threat, suspense – all are conjured in one formidable composition. The judicious framing, low-angle perspective and skilled manipulation of depth of field that characterise this atmospheric image further enhance its marked “film noir” quality.
