The objective that underlies the collection “Les Mondes de Schuiten” is to display the broad range of graphic material created by the artist in the course of his activities in set design, various design-related roles and poster art. A flashback to January 2002 reminds us that François Schuiten’s peers awarded him the Grand Prix of the Angoulême Festival. A man of lucid temperament, his delight in this accolade must have been tempered by the realization, on inheriting the festival presidency in 2003, that his perfectionism and insistence on testing the boundaries would no doubt cause him to work well beyond the call of reason, and often for the simple beauty of the gesture. Within minutes of his train’s departure for Brussels, he and Benoît Peeters, his long-time collaborator, ruminated on how a presidency might nurture the very best in bande dessinée, whether popular or elitist in appeal. Now released from the duties of office, he gives a retrospective and observant account, in “Un festival en images”, of his involvement with the Angoulême Festival of 2003.
