For the cover of “La machine à conquérir le monde” Eddy Paape changed his approach. Whereas for “Le château maudit” and “Le rayon super-gamma” he had brought together the main elements of the story, he chose on this occasion to concentrate his artistic skills on one element. For this image, as for many other scenes in the story, he opted for a spectacular low-angle scene. “Don’t forget that we were then at the heart of the Hitchcock era. It was a risky exercise – it would succeed or fail; all the more so given that I never did preliminary sketches for my plates. I get straight into it with ink.”
