“For Loustal, the essence is not necessarily that which is immediately visible” writes François Landon in “19 pastels.” “He considers that the truly satisfying nude is rare. Furthermore, he sets his nudes in surroundings where certain furnishings and details – the carpet, perhaps, or the curtains - carry abstract, sensual touches that signal meaning and denote pleasure. The colourful fish that appear in his compositions, sometimes as shimmering, metallic darts, sometimes as streaks of crimson, are such a visual element. “God is in the details”, as Mies van der Rohe wisely said.
