There are marked elements of early Mack Sennett or Buster Keaton in this “Gaston” image. Gaston’s mischievous use of a call device features in some other Franquin gags – “l’appeau à plombier-zingueur” (gag 232) and the phantasmagorical “appeau à oiseau sloup-touut” (gag 220).
