1996 will mark not only the centenary year of bande dessinée, but also André Franquin’s celebration of fifty years in BD. The illustrations selected for inclusion in the series “Les Siestes de Gaston” (the third and final image of which will be issued in 1996) are among the drawings of which he is most “proud” – insofar as the Modest One would ever use the term. If “Gaston et les paresseux” and “Gaston et le sieste littéraire” were created during a period of depression, they nevertheless radiate a sense of tranquillity. Despite his troubles, it was Franquin’s inescapable destiny to be our source of joy.
