Garage Quick

The imposing building that functioned as a model for Franquin’s drawing of the headquarters of “Génial Motors” can still be seen in Brussels. However, it ceased to be a garage some time ago and now houses discount outlets. Even if the original charm is long gone, the structure of the building remains as it was when Franquin drew it. The street, on the other hand, no longer bears any resemblance to the broad thoroughfare of his imagination; it is, in reality, a lot narrower… but in any case, it would never have allowed the Turbo 1 to execute a wide, generous u-turn. The image illustrates one of the secrets of the “Marcinelle” school: meticulous research provides a solid basis from which the artist can then depart in order to reinvent reality in a manner that is “even better than the real thing.”
