Bravo les Brothers

Normally, the process of adding colour to Franquin’s inked plates would have been undertaken by a specialist print studio, in accordance with the artist’s precise notations on colour. In the case of this cover binding for the “Journal” n°99, Franquin himself took charge of the colour process, which is most unusual. Even the black outlines were done by hand and applied directly to the cellophane layer, rather than by photographic transfer. The wonderful and unique qualities of this “direct colour” print have been restored and refreshed thanks to a meticulous digital restoration of this hilarious image.
