1000 têtes de Spirou

1000 têtes de Spirou

This virtuoso image, composed of 1000 heads of Spirou (and one of Gaston) for the 1000th edition of the handsome Journal de Spirou. It was a challenge at the time, and it remains a remarkable feat: one thousand renderings of the famous character, each one different yet all unmistakeably Spirou in essence. The exercise resembles an artist’s relentless quest for a character he cannot be said to possess; the resulting work is a chef-d’oeuvre of minimalism and conceptual rigour. It is an achievement that reaches beyond the boundaries of bande dessinée to echo, unconsciously, Warhol’s renowned multiple portraits. This is great art, and wonderful Franquin.
