“Off all the BD artists who emerged over the course of the decade, Serge Clerc is without doubt the one who was most in tune with his times. His formal research – the manifesto “Vers la ligne claire” launched by Ted Benoit remains his graphic manifesto and his narrative inspiration – and his quest for the “ultimate nothingness” – coincide with the desire for all that is spare and transparent (some would say vacuous) of a society undergoing great transformation. The coming to power of the Left might seem to suggest that the Eighties would be “clean” and the President of the French Republic, “cool.” Those who have looked at his drawings with a keen eye, but who may be less familiar with these bandes dessinées, will see him as the graphic herald of this brave new world.
