Meurtre dans l'atelier du peintre

Meurtre dans l'atelier du peintre

In the wake of “Le crime de la rue morgue”, the first collaboration between Champaka and the creator of “La comète de Carthage” comes a second scene of murder. In this scene, there is symmetry in the role-changes between the painted subjects and the real-life characters in the scene. It all seems deceptively easy for the virtuoso artist, but, as Chaland’s wife, the colourist and researcher Isabelle Beaumenay-Joannet, explains, “Virtuosity is acquired. To retain it, he was forever practising. He would take cinema magazines, copies of “Paris Match”, or catalogues, and do studies. He was always drawing, the way Jijé would, without looking at the subject.”
