This “complete” collection was published before the one brought out by Humanoïdes Associés. Fans of Chaland’s work have acclaimed it as the more beautiful of the two, and it is certainly the more original. The dichromic presentation of the plates is in keeping with the artist’s intention. In addition to the familiar episodes collected in the first volume, this version offers a second treasury of previously unpublished works and preparatory sketches. It also includes “Absences”, a notebook illustrated by Isabelle Beaumenay-Joannet. In this silent yet eloquent homage to a lost husband and daughter, the artist’s wife depicts the emptiness of an apartment that no longer resounds with their presence.
