Hiver à Bruxelles

Ever since his passing, many people have wondered what Chaland might have gone on to achieve, and how the master of more traditional techniques might have reacted to the sophisticated graphics tools that are now commonplace. While some imagine him creating animated cartoons for the young, we remain convinced that he would always have returned regularly to bande dessinée and to the well-worn tools of his trade. Within his profession, Chaland was the only “classicist” who had no fear of future trends, and the only “modernist” who saw no need to look with disdain on the great masters of his youth. Moreover, Chaland showed an immense tenderness for these “budding masters” who, as much as the “greats”, contributed by their work to the splendour of the golden age of Franco-Belgian bande dessinée.
