In the wake of Jacques Tardi, Dupuy&Berberian, François Avril, Jacques de Loustal, Jean-Claude Gotting and André Juillard, Ted Benoit made his notable entrance, in 2003, into Champaka’s print collection dedicated to Paris. Like his illustrious fellow-artists, he made it a point of honour to follow the guideline issued by the publisher: avoid the clichéd images beloved of tourism. With “La villa Arpel, Paris XXIe arrondissement” he invites us on a journey of discovery, taking us to a little-known arrondissement where life is lived in the looming shadow of Jacques Tati. The distinctive villa, with its twin round windows and the disciplined lines of its structure, could not fail to attract Ted Benoit’s appreciative gaze.
